My First Public Repsone
Hi Guys…
Mike here…
I hope your day is doing well.
It is a bit hectic for me here. I flew in from Brad and Andy’s Stomper event last night.
There was fog problems in NYC and we were delayed about 3 hours and I got home around 3 am.
So today, I am trying to get things back to normal at my office.
Some of you know, but many do not.
The report was not to go out until Wednesday.
*** The site never officially launched.
I spoke about the following in a forum and people think it is part of a ‘Fake Buzz’ story.
If the following was TRUE, I would fess up to it in a wink.
But here is really what happened and if you look at the timeline of events, it happened just like this…
(and do not get me wrong. I have no regrets.)
I was getting ready to go home to pack at 1AM on Friday Night to catch a 6AM flight to Atlanta for the Stomper Net event (was a lot of fun.)
I told Gary Ambrose about the report on Instant Messenger and told him to read it, and tell other friends of his to create an account that it could benefit him well because of the referral program on the second tier
… Well, he sent an email to a few people and one of the was….
… JOEL COMM
He sated “DO NOT EMAIL. The site is not ready and Mike will let us know when it is live when he gets back home on Monday.”
Well, Joel saw the link and did not read the entire message.
He read the report and sent a review to his entire list.
He called me (while I was eating breakfast in the hotel) 1 hour before I was to speak live on stage, and said,
“Dude… I just emailed for you.”
I said, “What??!! Very funny… Ha Ha”
He then told me he was not kidding and I asked him how it happened. He quickly read the email and said… “Ooops, now what?”
Well, as that was happening, Tom Beal was with me and heard us talking.
Tom says,
“I just got an email about it from Brian.
… I just got one from Ian
… There is a thread about it in the Warrior Forum.”
And just like that, as they say… All hell broke loose.
I did not even have it proof read.
So Tom did a fast proof read. V 1.2, Then later did another one. V 1.3
And late yesterday, Heather Vale did V 1.4 (you can now login to read it with little or no grammar errors or type-o’s.)
I had one hour before I spoke and now had to set up the Word Press Blog and activate the survey and TEST the site.
I was not able to see what was going on because I was at the event. I checked email late at night and then once on Sunday before we got on the plane to get back home.
Here are some of the results…
In just over 24 hours, we had over 34,346 people create an account to get the report.
Saturday - 11,807 (Day One - 13 hours total)
Sunday 14,196 (Full Day)
Monday - 8,343 (First 17 hours)
Total = 34,346
Unfortunately, we had some issues with the double opt-in emails coming in on time and only have 67% double opt-in rate so of those numbers, only 67% read the report.
Just a few things to address what people are asking.
I will leave the site up for about 2 weeks in its current format. I will then change the site and allow people to either refer the report via the site or just link to the PDF on their server. But I have not yet decided on that.
Some other interesting things is that I never even told my own members. Not even sure yet if I will. I would bet 95% of them heard about it already from someone else…
Maybe I will post it on my blog 
I am blown away that just sending one Instant Message has led to this.
Just one marketer sending 1 email had this spread so fast. Of course it uses viral marketing, but even I was blown away.

Now, Alexa is not the most accurate way to judge traffic for many reasons, such as they do not work with the FireFox toolbar and many marketers have the toolbar installed at a greater percentage than the real world.
However, according to ALEXA.com, there were only 140 sites in the entire world that got more traffic than this ours. (Yeay!)
I have not ever seen a marketing site reach that. I am sure a few have, but it is the first time I saw anything reach that low.
Some other notes. The report ends very short, leavening even me to feel… “That was a soft ending.”
I also want to clarify some stuff in the subject on the “Skulls”
I will either make a new version, a supplement report, or just post some stuff on the blog
Also, I want to thank those that took the time to do the survey. Fascinating results. I was surprised at many of the numbers.
The report has caused some controversy, as expected, and I laugh at people that think they can read my mind as to what I was up to.
The truth is, I want to write on this topic. That is where it ends.
I got the idea of how to do it just a few weeks ago.
I reg’d the domain and the site went live (by accident) just 14 days later.
So I did not have time to really think too much about it other than getting the report out to as many people as possible.
Other than that and building a new relationship with you, there was not that much more to why.
The report spoke of my real feelings.
Finally, I want to Thank Keith Baxter and Scott Boulch.
Their marketing campaign for their Death of AdSense report, inspired me on how to market this.
I do not know Scott, but Keith and I are good friends.
I wanted to call/email Keith on Monday to ask him to review it and share with his members and get his feedback.
It went live before I had a chance to contact him and at first I am sure he was like… “What? Come on!”
But we have spoken and he liked the report as well and he knows how much I appreciate is marketing.

Thanks for the email. Guess that was quite a surprise for you! So glad someone “let the cat out of the bag” though. I loved the little comment about those who do not like errors on sites and those who do, etc. Very funny.
Also enjoyed the report. I do not feel that what you are doing here is against what you “preach” in your report, my own opinion. I agree with you that there are TONS of the same things out there and I get bombarded daily with it. Promises and promises and I try and have losts literally thousands making me feel quite the fool! However, this was clever for you to do for the referrals and yet it was also good for us! So thank you, and thank you for the information and products! I do appreciate it. And you responded to an email I sent, so thanks for that, too! You are a real person…

The forum stuff was interesting
there were actually at least 8 threads created over the course of the day. The first 3 broke forum rules, so I created one that didn’t have an affiliate link. It stayed up, until a couple of other threads started.
At this point, the moderators (based on bad info) decided there was a concerted effort to flood the forum with threads about it, and deleted all the threads - 7, by that time. After discussion w/ a mod, and an honest question about the deletions, one of the mods created a thread to put all replies into - that’s the one running now that you’ve posted in, with around 120 replies and 3200 views.
The first threads had mebbe another 30 replies and 500+ views - so you can factor that into how much interest there’s been.

It was an excellent report, and it gained the attention it deserves.
Based on the number of promotion emails I have been receiving from some people, I have actually left their list even though I am an ongoing paying member of their membership sites.
Many marketers are taking things too far.
I especially liked the part about copyright issues, and I believe it has only just touched the surface of something very scary that is looming.
Just imagine if you had used a Getty image on a blog post, and that image was subsequently virally spread all over the internet via RSS syndication and feed sharing.
I have been using your report to demonstrate the dangers to people outside the IM marketplace, but people seem to think that once something is provided in an easy to syndicate format, copyright no longer applies.

Thank you for the report, and for your email. When I got the first email about the report on Saturday night, my first thought was that it was a joke. But Sunday I thought “Mike doesn’t write junk. I’d better check it out.” I was puzzled that I hadn’t gotten a message from you because I am on one of your lists. Now I understand.
The report is right on target. I needed to read it. I haven’t finished it yet, but from what I’ve already read, I’ve already learned. I think it should be required reading for newbies and seasoned marketers alike. (I don’t have a list yet, but I have already sent an email to the other members of my family that are into IM.) You have your finger on the pulse of what’s going on in IM and, as I said before, you do not write junk. Thank you again.

One of the things that strikes me in thinking about all the gloom and doomers in some forums who do nothing but talk about how they were scammed out of this or that by such and such marketer is this:
Those guys are failures. And it is ultimately their fault. If they fall for bad pitches of bad products, the embarrassment and shame is on them.
Then they get busy renouncing the whole “success on the internet” thing and make their mission (a profitless one at that) to talk about the whole internet marketing and success thing is a sham.
They find others to wallow in group pity with and they collectively make no contribution whatsoever to the internet or their own lives.
Flip to Mike’s issue this last week. When you have worked your butt off for a long time (getting scammed along the way at times yourself) you build up such critical mass that an ACCIDENTAL leak could get this much attention!
There is a point everyone who is now wildly successful crosses. After this point there is precious little that can stop them.
If people who complain all the time about scams would put that energy into their own success, they may find themselves accidentally making money and building a business.
That one lesson alone from all this is worth the whole journey.
I wonder how many people will actually see it.

I’m just a newbie in IM, but your report - it’s REAL SOMETHIN’. I think that Russian IM will not comes to death so fast as it only starts to grow, but thank you anyway to show the future of it “as is”.
And I think you’ve just open a new nishe - pay for subscribe to most interested members.. Why not - I’m asking myself ) At least I have found some fresh and free info about IM ) so I’m in.

Hi Mike!
I don’t read many 61 page reports from cover-to-cover, at one sitting, but I did read DoIM at one sitting — it was good, and informative.
I have heard you say a number of these things before, so much of it was not new.
But I did, in particular, like your concept of “lifeline” services. Very good point!
I think there is a point, in every IMer’s life where they copy, and after that, then they realize they need to innovate. I’m sure you realize this, after all, you are the guy who has the “Carbon Copy Marketing” product.
I am working with someone right now, who, like a lot of beginning IMers, has a problem with focus (and wanting to spend money on the latest thing–which lately, there have been quite a few of.
It’s actually helped keep me focussed as well.
The one concern I have about “skull” groups is that it could well seem to newbies even MORE like it’s harder to break into the IM “inner circle”, although there certainly would be more circles
While I think I understand where you are coming from, because you have some comparison with the group of folks who were learning, with each other, about IM, together — such as you and Russell — I still have a concern about it still seeming to block even more newbies out.
I think one difference is that, as you pointed out, is that of diminishing returns in the IM space. You and Russell were fortunate in following a bunch of IMers who were hugely successful, and many of them have subsequently “retired”. Since the next group (such as you and Russell) may not have found it quite as easy, and are not quite as ready to retire — newbies find themselves STILL in competition with folks like yourselves.
Let’s face it, there is a certain in-breeding of success. I’m sure Joel Comm was able to make a LOT more money off of the report (and not just because no one else was sending it out yet) because he was “first”.
Same with Russell’s new forum.
Sometimes it appears as the rich in IM only get richer. The person who promotes Butterfly Marketing when it first comes out makes lots of money, signficantly more than the poor bloke has had to pay for it. To entice the “big guys” in IM to take interest in promoting your product, it seems that there are ever higher & higher prices on the IM products.
If everyone collects into their own groups, then — to what purpose is it to go to seminars, and to network? Where does all the stuff in the interviews that Willie has on breaking into the IM “inner circle” play out, under your scenario.
Understand, I agree with Jack Humphrey — to a degree. But I think it is VERY easy to lose sight of what it is like for someone to be just starting out. There are MANY more products to choose from, and MANY more paths — which only serve to defocus the newbie.
A story. I knew, when I was an employee, that managers seemed to think that everyone was operating out of the same knowledge they were. But it simply was not true . Managers all go to their manager meetings and find out about stuff that his direct reports don’t have. And I confess, when I started having direct reports — even knowing of this “gotcha” — found myself, embarrassingly, committing the same error.
I remember you talking in Las Vegas about being able to pull amazing, 5 figure numbers just sending an offer to your list. And now you say that (if I read between the lines) isn’t happening.
Well, for one thing (in spite of my mentors who talk about “prosperity mindset”, about not having a “scarcity” mindset) — with all those launches, the number of people who want a piece of the IM pie has dramatically increased. But the poor guy just starting, his budget is still pretty much the same. So there are more people trying to get a piece of the newbie’s pocketbook. So — the question is, is the # of newbies increasing at the same rate as the # of folks who are wanting to offer products to newbies?
I responded, via an email, to a promotion that a recent marketer made to me. Now, I know this marketer (and he knows me as well — I’ve made some significant purchases from him).
And I asked him —
1/ do you have this product?
2/ have you used this product (it’s been out for a while); and
3/ what have been your results?
For whatever reason, I never received a response. Maybe it got caught in the spam filters — but I do know that it I was sending it to an address he reads.
Another amazing trend I find is people who sell stuff wo/a guarantee. You buy it, you own it — and don’t even think of trying to get a refund, for any reason.
To me, this is practically like they are thumbing their nose at their buyers. “I’m making so much money, I don’t have to deal with you — just buy my stuff and then go away — unless, of course, I need a testimonial.” The rich jerk may have said this explicitly — but a lot of IMers are saying it “between the lines”.
(Incidentally, I don’t count you among this group; I’ve been more than happy with just about everything I have purchased from you! With BFM, you really overdelivered, on multiple levels (product, forum, bonuses).
But — it is a good conversation to be having

Here comes the most interesting part, my story from yesterday: I receive Joel Comm’s email about your free report and naturally want to see how you present it. I look for a message from you… Nothing. Well, I kind of think this offer is too good to just pass (offering one chapter from the Batterfy Marketing which I don’t own), so I subscribe for it… through Joel.
And then I am asked for the confirmation code that should be sent to me in an email. As everybody probably knows, such things come instantly to your inbox, I guess from autoresponder.
So I sit watching my inbox…. Nothing.
I leave the computer and think I’ll check it every now and then. Nothing…
I get the confirmation code in around an hour, maybe more. I figure something’s happened to your server.
But I still see I have no message about the report from Mike Filsaime.
And then I receive your message (much later).
Well, thank you for clearing the mystery for me.

Hi Mike,
It was a good to meet you in person at StomperNet. Sorry Rich, you, and I didn’t have a chance to talk all together.
When you mentioned your report, I had my assistant find it for me right away.
I think you make some brilliant and much needed points in your report such as the oversatuation of product launches. The deeper problem, as Rich points out, is that Internet Marketers don’t have any backend path, so they run their business opportunistically. As you point out, it may be good to promote other’s products, but you need to be doing it systematically instead of based on a one-time reciprocity. The reciprocity has to fit into a business strategy instead being based on pure friendship.
As you say, people fall prey to those opportunistic offers when they don’t have a Vision, and a vision, need to be built around core competancies. If online marketers actually wanted to truly help their customers they would build customer profiles for each of their customers including their strengths and target offers to those unique strengths of the customers. That would avoid the Product Launch saturation. To implement you would need a CRM system in place and we can discuss more how to do that offline.

There have been a few excellent viral marketing programs/concepts/ideas recently that have taken it to a new level. Russel Brunsen’s Forum is one of them and the “Death of Internet Marketing” report another. This blow blows me away.

Mike you sure nailed it in on slam all the way with this one. I am new to this but, not stupid and what has been going on knocked the hell out of me and some of my ideas. I thought something wasn’t right with Marketing when started but, being new I was not sure. This explains what was and is knocking me out to the point that I haven’t made one red cent in anything in 3 months. I like others just don’t have the extra money to just throw away and that is real easy to do with all the BS out their. I could very will loose my ass real quick if I don’t find the answers, even just a small peice of the pie. Mike your answers sure do help and in fact in all you have to say without all the hype and pressure. I really did think that the market was changing when I started but, this is a 100% support of what is up for all of us. Thanks again Mike beyond words. So until next time.
