    Like the content, but read the report in spite of the graphic. Not a fan of that at all. As a woman who also happens to be interested in making money legitimately online, this wasn’t appealing. But I like your work (have the Butterfly Marketing manuscript) so I downloaded the report. So if I were a woman IM who was unfamiliar with your work, I would have probably passed on this and missed the good content…appearance does matter…just some feedback :)

    Well I have to said that everything you said made perfect sense to me…in fact I was already thinking a great deal of it myself. I am in a strange place as far as internet marketing goes, I’m been actively online and earning a small but regular income for 10 years now, but when it comes to Adsense and all the new innovations and Internet Marketing as a science I’m a newbie.

    It’s does not take a rocket scientist to see that all of these product launches one right on top of another are downright suicidal in the long run. Not only are most the people who are getting innundated with all of the emails quickly becoming burnt out, but the people sending the emails are just as quickly losing any credibility with their lists. In my opinion, in the end, it will be the internet marketers who use common sense, not to mention common courtesy, and build trusted relationships who will survive–not the ones whose list members begin to feel that they represent nothing more than dollar signs.

    Now you come out with this report and say what I’ve been trying to tell my readers for awhile, yet you put it into words I wish I would have!

    You nailed it man. I don’t think anyone can fail to see the writing on the wall AND the ways to combat the problems in the IM industry after reading your report.

    If they don’t get it now, they never will.

    Thanks for writing this. Now I just have to point to it instead of trying to figure out another way to say it myself!

    I’m going to comment on the last section of the report -

    It amazes me how many people use content and images from other sites even when you use outsourcing it is important to ensure that the source of everything is there and is truely unique or a geniue license for things not solely created.

    Everyone wants to make money not lose money — is it really worth pagerising or breaching copyright to make a few bucks to be sued later for a hell of a lot more? Commonsense here the answer surely a huge NO.

    So then I fail to understand why this continues even after it has been pointed out in forums.

    I was very shocked by the title- and I read it from cover to cover in an hour and a half, then reread portions. I think as some europeans would say this is “spot on” it explained a lot of the reasons why I have not been as sucessful as I wanted to be, and it opened my eyes to reality.     Nice report, Mike. I agree with many of your points. Liked the ‘Skull’ concept. However, the ’solution’ I’m adopting is along completely different lines - and only time will tell if it works as well.

    One reason I felt HAPPY after reading your report is the snippet about how big marketing experts were worried at the dropping responsiveness of their mailing lists… mine are SOARING above the previous average!

    So, I must be doing something right (like, for instance, making my new subscribers ‘qualify’ before they can even opt-in to my list!)

    This is nothing new to marketing professionals that use the internet. As it is still evolving and “the good old days are over” but “new opportunities ly on the horizon”. As the internet medium matures more discerned readers/viewers expect more to maintain their loyalty.

    In my oppinion, it is a good thing that hype associated with a poor quality product is failing on the internet (in fact everywhere). Sell a better product and the only hype will be the great product. The internet is a market of wannabe millionaires that will prostitute their morals for the $$$.

    In time alot of this nonense will disapear (but not all) and membership costs to knowledge rich membership sites will supercede the mass ocean soup of misinformation that currently exists.

    What else should we expect for nothing on the free internet?

    In marketing sales(and anything else) there are no constants except change itself.

    Hi Mike,

    Gary Huynh here. We’ve known each other for years and I’ve always been a big fan of your work. Remember my internet marketing reviews site where I reviewed your first ebook?

    I knew that someday you would reach the current level you’re at now because of your ability to see marketing with such clarity.

    One of the reasons you’be been really successful online is because you study what’s working and you innovate. Fire sales, OTO, affiliate prizes, jv blogs and a slew of other innovations you’ve started have been adapted by other marketers like carbon copy. Your first IM ebook really rings a bell now! Carbon copy marketing. People are copying your tactics and often times poorly. This leads to what seems like an oversaturation of those tactics.

    The biggest problem with the IM niche as I see it is that people simply like to copy techniques and not provide any new innovations, orginality or USP to their offers. When so many people use the same techniques and copy the same ideas, it becomes stale pretty fast. Failure to think outside the box often limits people in many ways.

    The second biggest problem I see with the IM niche is that newbies think they have to apply what they learn to the IM niche. That’s where we see students becoming teachers and so called ‘gurus’ popping up all over the place. This is pretty much a Catch 22 where you want to teach people how to promote your IM products but you don’t want them to turn into ‘gurus’ and turn around and sell their own products to your customers.

    If there’s one thing that has turned the lightbulb on for me is that whatever I do, I need to use more leverage to get others to build my business for me. I was making good money as an affiliate for other IM products but I was essentially building other people’s businesses. They were leveraging me.

    My comment regarding internet marketing being dead is that it’s only dead if you only market to the IM niche using carbon copy marketing (no pun intended) with no real innovations. If you’re marketing to other niches then the internet is still the least expensive and quickest way to generate a full-time income.

    Also, there are certain techniques used in marketing that are so powerful, they will work even if the prospects are fully aware of the technique being used on them. If you know these techniques and utilize them, you can still make a killing in the IM niche.

    Thanks for the report,THE DEATH OF INTERNET MARKETING.The info is so true and an eye opener for me.Im going to knock off alot of the marketers off my email list because it takes alot of my time just reading all that stuff and it just makes every thing more confusing.Like your report says,I need to find one area in marketing and get great at it instead of trying to soak up so much info in all the different new things that come along.Thanks

    I completely agree with everything said in “Death …” - I think it’s fair to say it’s all got to saturation point in the IM niche now, not just with product launches, but also with lots of other topics like AdSense, social (MySpace, etc) marketing and so on …

    I also took your comments on board Mike, about affiliates feeling obligated to promote products that everyone else seem to be promoting, possibly for fear of missing out - this is something I seem to have fallen victim to, but thanks to your virtual a*se kick, I won’t be making that mistake any more …

    So, if any of my subscribers are reading this, I apologise and normal service has now resumed from this point …

    Mike, I came to the end of your report and immediately hit the Blog link expecting a flood of comments already….

    Amazed that “so many” people are promoting it already, but have not made a comment here, perhaps it’s just that you changed the web address or something!

    You spoke a little about this a couple of weeks ago in London and I am one of the very lucky people who you have promoted this year (and very grateful too, thank you).. But I also totally understand what you talk about in your report and its somthing that I have spoken with my team and wife about in recent weeks.

    I (we) already have started to spread our business outwards from IM and will continue on that route. IM is still important and will still stay alive, it will just ’shift’ from its current form.

    You have the “advantage” to be looking down at all this happening whilst many are still down in the trenches fighting to see past tomorrows rent.. That is in no way a critism of you or anyone else who has “made it” (you know what I mean - of all people you know what I mean), but to say that people need to stop and look at what they are doing and get to the higher ground is right on the money.

    Look at what is NEEDED and re-think what is an “extra”. Be honest with yourself about your business and where you are heading. Have a goal, a strategy, the end in mind. Form partnerships and masterminds with others who share your ambitions and aims and work together to acheive goals.

    I am lucky to have been part of a mastermind group formation recently that is doing things already to move forward next year. Each person knows their goals and is working on their own aims, but also on a “group vision”. Your comments about groups of 6-10 will be the way forward for many and to see the bigger picture of what else is out there and not just in IM selling to IM.

    One of our group was talking with me only last night about the list not being as effective as it once was. Yet another person who I spoke with for the first time last week (and someone I can see myself spending more time getting to know and possibly working with in the future) had some awesome results from their own list…..

    Now both of these people are world class (not kidding). The difference of results in one to the other from what I see happening on my own site is this… The latter has a very interactive list. They are used to being shown things that work and then putting that into their own ways and means to see their own results.

    As you mentioned about the whole social network thing, this second person creates an envronment where the people make the business grow from their input (more viral if you like). YouTube, MySpace, all of these are growing, whilst the old industry Giants in media are now feeling the pinch and are looking to move on the issue.

    This will only compound our current business ‘issues’ as the big players will move to dominate our medium, the Internet. They will not continue to stand and watch their profits be eaten away…. So we all face a tougher challenge and very soon can expect to have to “pay our way” more like the old methods of advertising I guess!

    Anyway, getting on the soapbox here and all I wanted to say was .. A Great read and thanks for putting it together….” All the best….

I devoured your report today, and found it extremely interesting to see the similarities in what you are doing with this site / information and the Scott Balousch info-launch a couple of months ago. I hope this trend doesn’t continue … after all, not all of us have $30K to spend on new susbscribers …LOL.

    On a more serious note, the information that you have shared should rock the internet marketing world back into reality. I have felt for some time that the scene was developing into the bedlam of ‘noise’ that we see today. Despite the grim outlook for current methodologies, you presented us with a very good evaluation of where we need to go from here. I say that this is one of the best free reports I have ever read, next to Rich Schefren’s Internet Manifesto.

    Just read your report and with all due respect there was not much that was new or startling.

    Even the name seems to be borrowed from Scott Boulch’s “Death Of Adsense” You have even used the same affiliate type marketing he did.

    Much of what you say in the beginning ofthe report reads like a summary of Rich Schefren’s teachings, I know both of us are students of his. Not that this is wrong or invaluable, its good stuff, its just not living up to the name of your report.

    Getting to the name of your report, your ramblings make me think its all in search of an ego stroke…the poor little rich boy pleading with everyone to stop asking him to promote their products and asking us not to blame you for being part of the overkill in product launches. Mike, you made tons of money from everything you were recently involved in so stop whinning.

    I read the report from beginning to the end, much of what is said is good but nothing new or particularly interesting.

    Mike pays attention in class but must try harder

    Just maybe being the godfather of Internet marketing you can bring some sanityto what is done across the Internet Marketing community.

    My observation after three years is there are too many people who are very amaturish about they do. They really must only spend five minutes a day to what they do. They call the e-mails they send newslettera. There is no newsletter there is simply blatant promotion of some product they have been notified about.

    Either by accident or my own stupidty I am on no less than 100 e-mail list. There is nothing more annoying than 100 people cutting and pasting the same offer and all sending it out by 11:00 AM with not original comment in any of the e-mails.

    I can count on one hand the people who actually display good business sense and also display a high level of integrity. I hate people who have blocked e-mail addresses and who cannot be bothered to answer a question about something they are promoting. If you are going to promote something know something about it.

    The issue of software applications; Dowload.com & Twocows.com promote 1,000’s of software applications with code key locks and dropdead timers in them.

    No one who promotes any software application via direct e-mail will allow anyone to test drive anything. One shoe size does not fit all. The same for a software applications. One person;’s poison may be another person’s gold. Just trust me if you don’t like the software I will give you back your money is like having your sister pull one of your teeth. Just drink a beer it won’t hurt.

    Just like I told Nancy Pelosi the speaker of the house representatuives to be. Nobility, decency, honor. integrity, and respect for others. Demand it of yourself and expect no less from others

    That is the secret code that seems to escape 75 % of the people in North America regardless of what they are involved in. Good luck Mike maybe you can change the way business is conducted on the Internet

    Your report was very interesting indeed. Many of the things you talked about like the “skulls” concept is very true and is something that I have been aware of. However… I believe that there are certain truths about marketing that if you know them, it doesn’t matter how the landscape changes, you can be a successful marketer. One of these truths is knowing how to convert and how to use the power of conversion. I believe that if you know how to use the power of conversion, no matter how the market changes, or even what market you are in, you can be extremely successful.

    Gary Marsh here and I wanted to say thanks for the eye opener!

    You see, I just recently purchesed your Butterfly Marketing course and I am just about ready to go live. Well, Since I follow your words, business, and just about everything I can find. I’ve now decided to change the focus of my vision.

    Actually, I need to create an actual vision instead of being that internet marketer you talk about in ‘The Death Of Internet Marketing’. When I read the continuous go from program to program. It was like a slap in the face.

    Thank You! I needed that.

    Anyway, your right about the October product launch blitz. I am on every big name guru list and I got pounded! So much so that I did in fact felt a little angry. I simply love Internet Marketing and would love the chance to be profitable within the industry. But, after reading this, I know I am wrong in my approach.

    The approach is exactly the opposite of what I should be focusing on. I should be working as the report states, within my strengths! I wrote out the survey before I actually read the report and found that you have been the one subscription I’ve kept throughout my tenure this last 18 month’s. In fact, I’m pretty much on every list of yours because I probably get about a billion emails from you. I read every one of them and have probably been one of your best customers.

    My focus has now changed and I want to thank you for that. I hope that I can implement your butteryfly Marketing program into my business and achieve great success. My time is quickly coming to an end and I have focused on IM for so long.

    By the last paragraph, I mean that I am approaching my high year tenure within my career in the US Navy. I have one year left to retire and focus on my business. But, in order to do that, I must be able to match my income. I’m running scared and that is why I’ve been buying up every program out there.

    Now that I see the errors of my ways, I can focus on one thing and become an expert in that. I understand that is Ok to be just good at something. In the military, I have been taught to be the best at everything I do. Well, I’ve done a pretty damn good job of that! Now its time to focus my on my strength and get busy.

    I hope you read these blog post and that you see my thanks to you for your BM program as well as the report this post is about. I will continue to use you as my example to follow.

    October was definitely a month where I unsubscribed from more lists than ever before and lost confidence in some marketers at the same time.

    The ironic thing about this report is that my email box has been flooded with “The Death Of Internet Marketing” all day long.

    It’s now hard to tell whether all the marketers are truly looking out for me and want to share this info with me or if they want to make a quick buck promoting a free product. Personally, I think they should all do it for free.

    I have gained respect for the marketers who are not constantly bombarding us with the latest product launches. And I gained respect and learned a valuable lesson from some marketers that turned me down when I asked if they could promote my product. In the end this was best for all of us.

    I appreciate you mentioning that earning an income online is work, but if you are having fun it really isn’t work now is it? So true Mike and not enough people mention this.

    In fact many people really should take a moment to think about what is motivating them to learn how to make an income online. Is it to make a quick buck, or is it because they want a job they can have fun at each day and help many others do the same thing?

    You mention some of the new tools that we can use to catch the attention of our audience. The great thing is many of these tools are making it fun to market. YouTube has been a blast for me.

    Hearing about George Lucas changing his approach had me thinking that he is probably going to have more fun creating movies for TV than he ever has for the big screen.

    I love the Bulldozer effect and this is actually something that I was talking to a fellow internet marketer about just the other day. I would much rather experience this exact scenario rather than be a one hit wonder.

    I can see many benefits to the Skulls concept, but it is the one thing in the report that really has me thinking about any downside. For one, I’m sure there will be a time when one of the members creates a product that you just don’t believe in…do you still feel obligated to promote for this person because he is a member of the Skulls?

    Second, does this ’secret society’ cause you to put up blinders and possibly miss a product that could really benefit the members of your list. I know you’re not saying to totally ignore everything else and it does give you that out when you are approached by so many people to jv with, but I still wonder if it would create a bit too much tunnel vision.

    In the end, I believe it should be the quality of the product and how much you believe in it that determines what you promote and not the person or the people that you align yourself with.

    You’re gonna have me thinking about this concept for a while.

    You have also inspired me to take the rest of the weekend to really sit down and write out my vision and make it as clear as possible, as well as take a look at what I really rely on for my business to function and what I could do without.

    I am looking forward to observing the evolution of your business and am interested to see if others follow suit.

    Well this report made an electroshock to my mind, i’ am a Newbie in IM, i begun in august this year and there was already lots of Programs (MLM, Affiliate and so) that i tried.

    I jump in SFI, GDI, SI, ClickBank and i spent lot of money to join some newer MLM and super “Secrets” Ebooks. Since October’s Prelaunch Products i’am totaly lost.

    I made what you explain in your Report : Go to one prelaunch MLM to another and spend my time and cash to advertise, email or whatever for catching some downline.

    You Report make me sense that i am not good enought to continue in the IM way. As you say, be an Expert will be a must in short time and i’am not an expert so… I’am thinking to make a pause and thinking about your advice.

    Thank you Mike to share your thought about the future of the IM and give me the light of what i do at this time, and what i have to do in the future to stay in the IM business.

    I am certainly one of those experiencing an overload of new promotions, and will soon have to start shedding some of the email addresses I use as the sheer bulk of mailings is just getting too much to handle.

    I must have received at least a dozen emails telling me about this report.

    As an environmental consultant the highly niche nature of our work promotes well through incredbly niche web sites, and the success for us of zero Google ranked, less than ten page, web sites has been excellent.

    For my business I have won about 80,000GBP from one such 10 pager over the past 4 years, which sells a water treatment process and gets no more than 1 visitor a day.

    Therefore, the statement that the more highly “niche” sales will continue to improve is borne out by our experience.

    So, good report, and an interesting read, but would I really have lost money by not reading it? No, that’s a bit of hype to my mind!

For those of us who are trying to learn to become successful, it’s been hard to know who or what to believe!
    You have given us much food for thought and a direction to go in. I have tried to follow the ‘crowd’ but it has always seemed that those with the big lists come out top all the time. I have also got the impression that the only way to make money was in internet marketing information, as that was what seemed to get promoted the most. I certainly feel like I have come close to abusing my small list by more frequent promotional mailings.

    It was last night at about 4:00 am AEST… I was about to go to sleep when I downloaded your “The Death of Internet Marketing” report. I just wanted to give a quick peek before I call it a night.

    BIG MISTAKE! :P I ended up staying away until 8:00 am AEST… that’s when I first look ad this blog with no posts yet… I wanted to reflect right then, but my body had a different idea about what to do. ;)

    Fast forward 4 hours… wow… another short night I am back here to ive you my thoughts.

    You just hit so many nails straight on the head with your report… it’s gone!

    With my Add2it line of products I am definitly in the IM niche… but then at least my last site at www.GoTo-Pro.com is basically following “Lifeline Services” advice.

    Man, I can tell you one thing for sure. After now meeting you twice on a seminar… I defenitely wish you could by in my “Skull” team… but slim chance, I know. You decision on who will be in your “Skull Team” has probably been made already some time agi. :)

    I also leed like I got my last site launch right in regard to the “Bulldozer Launch”, well… at least to some degree. Instead of this big one-time puch at the launch in July, I keed searching and adding JV partners that I can do “Integration Marketing” with.

    Also the comments on “Opportunities” are straight on… man, I defenitly joined way to much and bought too much information for different areas. The learning / doing gap is huge. :( But I am trying to catch up… it’s now an investment stop in “how to” products. :)

    What’s next?

    1. I have to get crystal clear about my vision… it’s still way to foggy.

    2. I have stary forming my or joining a Skull Team. Guess the i5Gold forum it the best way to start.

    3. I have to finish my “Wifes, Cars & Taxes” 7 days firesale ready as I want to launch it tomorrow. The page is not yet 100% done… but it will be at http://Complete-Pro.com/firesale/

    I thought the report was excellent. Bad news for me as I was just getting started with a desired JV attempt. Which brings me to my concern of the report, SKULLS - if the large names of the industry form one or two SKULL groups, how the heck will the small folks get a word in edgewise.
    Besides I am not really in the IM market anymore, I played that game and went onto working with my brother to make candles as a chandler. I use Information Marketing to promote candles and making candles. Already I have trouble with creating JV’s, and with the Skull formations it will become that much more difficult, however, I see the sense and inevitability of the market.
    In some ways the Internet will become only for the IM salesperson and no longer for anyone wanting to sell otherwise at this rate. You’ll have to tote out a chunk of change as a non-player from outside to get your product out there eventually. Information/internet marketers will become almost like online publicists or marketing companies not allowing any one else to come play if you aren’t a practicing member. When you are from another arena you will have a tough time entering to market for yourself.
    I recently read in my local paper that AOL wants to charge for emails as do others. So some predictions aren’t as far fetched as they seem. Strategic marketing planning will definitely have to be utilized in the very near future if AOL has their way.

    Thanks for the report and thanks for commenting on this topic. I think you hit the nail right on the head with quite a few points about this whole ‘the death of IM thing’. I kind of seen this coming and just wondered who was going to be the first ‘guru’ to speak out on this.

    The reason I say that I seen this coming and that I was wondering who would be the first guru instead of just who would be the first internet marketer or even just the first person, is because I have seen this topic talked about a lot in forums, and other sites on the web, and from people who say pretty much the same thing you say, but don’t ever seem to get taken seriously because they are not a ‘John Reese’ or a ‘Mike Filesame’ ;D

    So this topic has been in some people’s radar even before this report it seems, but I am just glad you made this report about it because it obvioulsy took someone with an honorable and well known reputation to make others aware of this situation. Kudos to you Mike, for the release of this report.

    Just read your report and have to say, I have wondered why the marketers didn’t wake up and realize that they were killing the goose with the “flood” method of E-mail marketing. I have been studying for a couple of years now trying to get a handle on how to market on the internet. One of the problems I ran to, you very aptly stated in the first part of the report. So many gurus were teaching, grab each product and market it (opportunity marketing rather than building a business). Many were saying do it “my way”. What I found was that I was running in circles and going no where because each week and sometimes twice a week there was a new promotion. What I needed was your advice a couple of years ago.

    I haven’t quite finished Rich Schefren’s “Final Chapter” yet but his advice is very simalar to yours, “find your vision, determine your talents and strengths and then focus on building a business along those lines”. I think you both are on target. I think the method you recommend, Skull and Bones groups, although I hate the name, will be a boon to the lists each marketer mails to. I have gotten to the point that when mail comes in from certain individuals, it is deleted because I know that it contains no content, just the promotion for that day. I may miss some good products but I get so tired of the noise. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I just hope that other marketers take your suggestion.

    Thank you for the report and thank you that it was free. You are right, you could have sold it. But remember the advice, what you hope to receive, give away. That way it comes back to you many times over. Thanks again

    Two things I found your report hit on especially that I learned in the last two months: Bulldozers are awesome, and Skulls revolutionize your business.

    I’ve built FreeAdReport.com to a healthy size since August without any launch, but a consistent flow of new members who love the site and product enough to send more people to it. What that’s done is made it a much more consistent and steady site.

    Like a few of my Mastermind members have said above (Hi Martin and Scott!), being in a group of likeminded people can be incredible. In addition to the promoting aspect however, this group has a fraternal bond of comraderie, as well as idea generation that is sorely missing when we try to do it by ourselves.

    I also liked getting a glimpse into your mindset and vision for the future, knowing how much of Rich Schefren’s teachings are coming out in this report. Thank you for sharing it with us.

    I have had several people ask me in the past couple months, “who is this Mike guy that keeps e-mailing me?” and I too have wondered “why is Mike promoting so many programs? I have unsubscribed from lists that abuse the privelidge of emailing to me, the ones that over-do it, and just so you know how I read them, I toggle all, or check all boxes, then go down the list reading the subject line and from line and I uncheck the ones I want to read and unsubscribe the ones who send 3 and 4 emails per week.

    Unless of course it is someone who has inspired me to pursue an online income and who I highly respect, then I just check the subject line for duplicate content that I have seen in several other emails and delete the individual e-mail. That is why some of the e-mail you send me never gets read Mike. Ooops, now everyone will know I was talking about you!

    Yeah, and after reading The Death of Internet Marketing I see you have realized you are getting less read the more you send, and that shows me you are paying attention to detail and you are not set in concrete and allow yourself to change.

    You lead by example Mike, and that’s what I like about you most. I may delete some of the e-mail you send me Mike, but I will never unsubscribe from your list. Thanks for putting in the report the info on how to use several different subject lines and testing the effectiveness, I will be reading that section again and taking notes.

    The section on the law, and resale rights, using images, is priceless info and must be shared with everyone involved in Internet Marketing, so I will be placing a link to your report on every website I own.

    Great that you’re enabling us to give feedback with this blog, good to see you’re putting the power back into the hands of the people.

    I appreciated your report. It was like you read my mind in terms of the
    information overload, I snapped up nearly every product I was offered even though there was no way I was ever going to implement it immediately, I impulse bought, then dropped it to chase after the next new shiney product, like a product magpie. I blew lots on Adsense products even though I had no idea on how I was going to create the sites to put the Adsense on in the first place, what good was that?

    What I do now is stop myself and assess if there’s a genuine need for it, and if I’ll ever use it in my business, if not, I don’t get it.

    When it came time to use these products, I suffered from paralysis by analysis, it was too overwhelming, so I simplified things by selecting and using only a few to start with eventually building the rest in later wherever the need arose.

    You also hit the nail on the head with the inundation of email solicitations too, it got to the point where I had 4 different people trying to shove the same offer down my throat, complete turn-off, from that alone, I vowed that when I successfully built my own list, I would continue to offer top quality information, make it engaging so they’d actually want to read my newsletter and offer product solicitations every 2 or so months, but only if I’d actually tried the product myself, was of the best quality and saw the value in it for my subscribers would I recommend it to them.

    With the current emails I receive, I feel like all I’m perceived as is a dollar sign to the point where there’s a marketer on every street corner peddling their products at the top of their lungs to buy whatever it is they’re selling. They’re too busy screaming at you to care what you want. Classic example, a marketer sent me solicitations every day for different products and the one day he included “free” information he joked “that’s okay, you don’t have to get your wallet out for this one”, I found that comment pretty condescending.

    Also, if every product they’re trying to sell me everyday is “special”, or a “one of a kind”, then nothing is, their recommendations carry diminishing weight.

    Bottom line, I think as long as marketers remember the subscribers they deal with are real people and treat them as such instead of as dollar signs, they’ll want to stick around.

    In October i was receiving over 400 emails a day in what I considered my Private contact box on all these October Launches. I would receive email from 7 or 8 people aday claiming to represent Mike Filsaime or some other GURU.

    They all had the same subject lines they all had the same content. I REFUSED TO SUBJECT MY LIST TO THIS. I know I have Lost money because of it But this has gotten way OUT OF HAND. Having to spebd HOURS a day Filtering email.

    Mike Filsaime is one of the Best and Honest People on the net and I really appreciate it when he comes out with straight forwarded information on topics such as PayPal and Internet Marketing OverLoad.

    I just got done reading your report. It got me thinking about many things. There has been a lot of noise the last few months, and I am on so many lists many times I don’t even open emails or read them, just sort it to a folder for that particular marketer and leave it for a future swipe file…

    I have received over 25 emails today (Saturday) and read about 4 of them. I have over 2000 unread emails in my inbox and various filtered folders. What does this mean, I only read the emails of the marketers that I truly respect and some with interesting headlines. Oftentimes, I don’t even touch them until a couple weeks or months later. If I see a couple of emails from various marketers discussing the same thing I might take a peek, but more often than not they just get filtered. All this is for only one of the half a dozen email addresses that I check regularly. Also, this does not include all the forums, blogs, social networking sites like myspace, facebook etc…that I would checking regularly as well.

    A few days ago I actually found out that I had missed an email for an opportunity a couple of months back that could have really helped my business move forward, but it was lost among all the noise that I was receiving. I will be sticking to a leaner diet of which marketers that I will follow closely and make sure that I establish my vision and measure my subscription to their lists by that vision; rather than just subscribing to every tom, dick and harry and getting inundated by emails.

    In studying Internet Marketing, going through courses and meeting people I have realized more and more that it is a relationship business. Doing what is the best for the customer and your own list of subscribers is paramount to making a quick buck. It is the relationship between the writer and the list that makes all the difference. We buy from those we know, like and trust. Trust is probably the toughest of the three and can be broken easily.

    I agree with you that the Product Launches will get tougher and tougher in the IM field. There is just too much noise not only through email, but blogs, forums, social networking sites, videos, teleseminars. The BBFS system must truly come into play in the IM field.

    I enjoyed your analogy about taking a trip to Hawaii, but getting distracted by trying to go to Aruba, Fiji and Cancun. It would be quite funny if it were not so true. Trying to be good at everything and ending up being a good for nothing.

    My biggest take aways is
    1. Get clear about my vision, turn down the noise and filter or run
    everything I do through the vision filter
    2. Form my own Skulls Network
    3. Diversify into niches outside IM
    4. leverage user created content

    An important introduction:
    Around 2003 I became rather passionate about Internet Marketing. It was completely new to me and I loved learning, applying what I’ve learnt, creating websites, having some success, but mostly not.
    Then, in the beginning of 2005 I started an incredible personal journey and at the same time I left the Internet Marketing scene all together.

    This summer I felt like starting to play with it again to some degree, for the pure fun of it. Coming back I realized I look at it all with fresh eyes, and as I’m not dependent on the Internet money anymore I also feel free and able to view the Internet Marketing scene without getting sucked into the frantic of it, if you know what I mean.

    What I observed surprised me. I can’t say where I got these ideas from. I just observed they were popping up and a picture emerged.
    I don’t think I’d ever be able to draw that picture and put it into words - but that’s exactly what Mike did here. Wow.

    This is exactly how I see it Mike - and I admire you for saying it so clearly.
    As always there will be some who will just take it as another ready made “prescription for success” - and others that will understand the true values hidden here - and build on them in their own unique way.

    Thanks for a great and profound report which gets to the heart of the problem Mike. I can see a problem with these mastermind groups, however. If you bunch together 8 people who get 95% of the people anyway, you are excluding the people who get the other 5%, they will eventually decide IM is not for them even quicker and then who will these top marleters promote to. The rest of the marketers are also getting the word out, and getting others involved in IM in the first place, but that would die off surely if there’s no where to go with it, because 8 people have it sewn up that way.
    I understand the way this fits in with looking for other niches to market to, and that people will still need to learn to market online to do it. It just reminds me a bit of the Microsoft/Intel marketing of a few years ago, where innovation is stifled because it’s difficult for anyone else to get noticed when the big players exclude them from their party.

    Still a great report, and hits the nail on the head, without being negative, but instead offering the solutions to the problems the IM brigade is suffering.

    What a breath of fresh air the report was. I really enjoyed the way that your report has gone so viral, it looks like the $500 to charity Michael Cheney promised to anyone who got you to promote his product is safe!

    Yesterday I watched the product launch DVD’s that I got as part of the Nickel ManiaX and it was starting to hit me that I was trying to sell information that I wasn’t qualified to give out - it would be like trying to teach the teacher when you haven’t actually passed the exam.

    I have had my moment of insperation and know what to launch now, it will focus on the long tail of people desperate to build a list and teach them how to use these services, avoiding the newbie mistakes.

    I think i’ll just lauch it and see if the viral exponent will turn it into a success.

    first thanks.
    I want to add some aspects.
    1.) Wealth comes from value creation. So every marketer should ask how he can create or add value for his customers. If somebody is just copying there is no value creation.
    2.)The overdose of product launches has something to do with the megashort product live cycle in the Internet Marketing Niche. This has again something to do with disregard to copyright. Intellectual property rights like patents and copyrights have been introduced to extend the product life cycle of knowledge product as to allow the producer to recap his investments. If you have an industry without regard of intellectual property rights, you have really only one week to monetise a knowledge product. And then you have no other option than the big buzz.
    3.)Knowledge products are generally monetised by either incorporating them into a physical product i.e. book, pill or at into repeatable events like a seminars, concerts, expeditions, musicals. This brings into play scale, organisation, processes etc, what Rich Shevren is talking about.

    These are hints, not thought to the end. But if you are interested I can show you some things at the example of the travel industry - you could also take the financial service industrs - how scale plays out in the IT economy and where I see the big opportunities.

    One of the reasons why I went into the internet marketing field was ironically to be able to finance my life dream of self-publishing my own books, both fiction and non-fiction. You see, my passion is writing, and when I first came in, I thought it would be a very short-term thing, try it, make some money, get out, publish my books, live my dream.

    But then I had already guessed what was going on with the internet, with people and with the world in general. I had sort of a feeling for it. Your report crystalised my notions and intuitions into words and solidified it for me.

    The positive thing I want to take out of it is that maybe I can use what I learned from internet marketing to live my passion, my strength and my life dream, which is to write. And there isn’t going to be a limit to what the medium my stories will take - film, web comics or simply prose.

    About 5 years ago, if I want to embark upon what I am now going to do, I may not have been so successful, now, I don’t know, things have changed, the social phenomenon could just make my dream come true more easily for me.

    I read this report with healthy sceptism. It reminds me of all those news reports when the Internet 1st started “Death of Newspapers” what bunk. “Death of Adesens” again rubbish, just a pre-amble as it turned for “Flip clicking”

    Whilst the report makes valid points about Internet Marketing it must be remembered that all Internet Marketing is, is selling something that someone preceives that they have a need for and that the value placed on the purchase is what the seller believes the punter will pay for it.

    I was and in offline sales together with online sales and no matter how you make it sound I am a salesman first and foremost. I look at the customer as a mark that it is my god given right to take cash from, like all salesman I use all the selling techniques that I can to make someone put their credit card into my processor.

    Human nature is to have “things” and as long as there is a tool to get the product to the customer then we believe that advertising hype and a “must have” situation is born. I used to sell in America on the west coast in California, silver and gold jewellry, coming from Wales (in the UK) as I do, I was always amazed at the ease of a sale in the States. I think Americans are conditioned to “buy” whatever the cost - nothing will change.

    “He Who Dares Wins” - read the report by all means and take some of the points out it but don’t be put off, remember to focus and make your dream come true. Remember that Mr. Filsaime started out with a dream, it’s not rocket science it’s selling and selling is a game.

    Thanks very for the well reasoned and illuminating report - it has crystallised many of the things I have been thinking (and occasionally writing about) for quite a while. As someone who has been involved in the direct marketing for some time, what is happening in web marketing (the ’selling shovels’ variety) seems to be echoing what happened 10 years ago in the offline ‘biz opps’ market, which had become similarly circular and incestuous.

    Even the fact that my inbox is suddenly filled with Death of IM messages with exactly the same ‘copy and paste’ text shows the truth of what you are saying. But as well as the total overload aspect there is also the massive devaluation of e-products that has suddenly become very pronounced.

    OK, the ‘value $197′ label attached to some modest ebook was always garbage, but recently I have acquired a number of really good tools and software for a tiny fraction of what equivalent products would have cost a year ago. I have even picked up some major products I considered buying for $50-$100 for FREE from some of the recent spate of giveaways.

    All this confirms to the letter what you say in your report, and even as a ‘niche’ marketer it is clear that like everyone else I face a fairly steep learning curve to keep up with the evolution of the Internet. Although your ‘JV’ solution is possibly less applicable to specialised niche marketers,

    I for one will take your lessons on board and try to come up with my own appropriate responses. Your report helps enormously to clarify both what I need to do, and what I should ignore or at least ‘deprioritize’.

    I read your report with interest and have seen you together with other top internet marketers here in the UK at different IM seminars. I think we all know where your coming from in terms of the October over kill and SKULL affiliation/alliance and it does not surprise me to see you as the first to “spill the beans” and tell the truth.

    I was one of the newbies that has taken everything you said combined it with other successful internet marketers advice (most info sought at the sales fest seminars in the UK) and produced products and websites to sell my wares.

    I also understand the bulk of your message and thank you for being honest. I just hope that all the effort that has gone before us will not be wasted and that the JV lives on.

    I will of course be looking for Mike Filsaime, Stephen Pierce, Derek Gehl and Ted Ciuba to come forward and jump on the JV band wagon on my latest launch www.theinternetmasterclass.com. After all I did pay special attention and followed every word to the letter that you guys preached.

    This is innovative. Thanks for pointing out the trends for successful websites. Consumers now decide what they want based on very sophisticated and intricate systems. Allowing members to create content and dictate relevance has proven successful. In short it is the rise of user-submitted, user-rated websites.

    However, we have to be careful of the mismatch between internet marketer and internet entrepreneur. Let assume your passions and strenghts are in internet marketing. Imagine an internet marketer doing the job of an internet entrepreneur, ….failure due to mismatch is a certainty.

    It’s so true… the launch crazy is terrible! Something has to be done to prevent this “overkill” in the future!

    After reading over 80 comments on this blog, I’m really amazed no one gets the real point here, and maybe even you, Mike, either hasn’t caught on or doesn’t want to spell out the aweful truth: there’s a central fallacy in IM.

    I’ve always found it curious that an industry can survive where the entire attraction is people selling their trade secrets to “help everyone else to succeed.” Thousands of people are prepared to spend thousands of dollars for others people’s secrets, which supposedly can make them thousands or millions when applied. The problem is, trade secrets are secret for a reason: because when they’re exposed, and everyone knows them already, they become overused and ineffective. That is totally inevitable. It’s the nature of the beast. In one sense, this creates a constant need for new products and ideas as the old ones cease to work, like planned obsolescense, but on the other hand, it leads to burn-out and having to shell out huge amounts of money to keep up.

    The other obvious result is that as more people get into the act, the profits are going to thin out, for several reasons: more players spreading the profits, too many products being sold to the same market, and it requiring more work to succeed in an industry that is almost always promoted as the “lazy man’s way to wealth.” And as more marketers take your advice and say “no” to JV’s with the newbies, those newbies (who are the core of your market) will get frustrated and leave, and it will be the whole MLM fiasco all over again.

    Not a pretty picture, but that’s the reality of it, like it or not. Like every other explosion, the bubble will burst and a few people will be left to pick up the pieces, and make a modest living henceforth.

    Thanks for the thought provoking report. I am glad that finally it is being recognised that IM is not about sitting on the beach. There is always work to do!

    Jeff’s PLF did indeed create alot of very similar launches, but so too did butterfly marketing (launches of similar websites) which interestly enough wasn’t mentioned. There are now many “get in free and have this oto” sites out there as a result of BM. And marketing this way to build a list is becoming more of a challenge.

    Definitely love the promotion of learning from real experts, and learning the knowledge first hand. Also the separation of strengths from passions without mentioning researching what the market wants is different! But I can see where you are coming from and understand the thought behind it.

    As a Life Coach I agree 100% on the vision issue. You can’t know where you are going if you do not have a clear vision of it which is why personal and professional visions are so important to help you stay focused and on track.

    What I will do next is look at how my new life coaching club can add the extra element of allowing members to post or add comments. Hopefully you will be looking at how to improve the butterfly script to include this (as my club has been created using BM). It certainly is a great way to go.

    Focus and consistently is definitely what it is about. I was all over the place when I first discovered IM last year. In September 06 I ditched EVEYRTHING and all the newsletters I subscribe to except yourself, Willie Crawford and Joel Comm. So that I could focus on my business without distraction and I figured if anything great came out one of you 3 will be promoting it!!

    My main problem is the “stickyness” of what I do in the eyes of my clients. When there are bills to pay, electric bill versus personal development, then pd loses. Even though that is the time you need a coach the most. I just have to think about making me stick more :0)

    I have recently joined an alliance which is great, but I was disappointed in your saying no part. Not to saying NO. That is important. But it sounded a bit to me (and this is just my perception of it). That what you are saying is “I’m at the top now, if you are just starting tough, I’ve got mine”

    What will happen now is that newbies will be isolated. Remember starting from scratch? And yes 8-10 newbies could get together but it would be a long road. Surely you can advocate looking to who will be in an alliance, and allowing a newbie or two in if you recognise potential - rather than say “you need to be like me or tough luck”. Jason is an example of someone you recognised potential in and he turned out okay ;0)

    And then again maybe everyone needs to make their own success like you did rather than rely on everyone at the top, perhaps that is more where you are going with that.

    Still I don’t receive 3 JV requests a day so I guess you wrote this from where you are now and what is happening to you today. Perhaps when I become as well known as you I may possibly be saying the same thing.

    Overall a fantastic report, thought provoking and some definite things to look at implementing. Thank you for taking the time to write it, and for paying out to make sure people read it.

    Bonjour,

    I was reading the report until 1.30 am this morning (much to my husband’s displeasure!)
    I couldn’t put it down until I had read the whole thing.
    I was sick and tired of getting all the same new launch e-mails and just supprimed them without bothering to read “yet another one.”
    As a result of reading the report, I wrote down a precise vision and have made some decisions and plans, the main decision being to focus on 3 things.
    Thank you for the free report.
    One non content comment that I’d like to add is that a proofreader is a very helpful person! Perhaps it’s because I’m an English teacher and a proofreader, but when I see lots of errors, it agitates me and sometimes it turns me off completely. In this case the content saved me from turning off, but I did get agitated! (I’m including promo letter, e-mail, survey etc here). Eg. Were we supposed to be blogging our thoughts or bolgging them?
    I didn’t get too agitated, but it is something to bear in mind. I know that it agitates or turns off other people too. Well, I’ll shut up, now.

As a relative newbie to all this, I tell you I have been getting real tired of having 50 to 100 messages a day in my inbox, most promoting the same couple of “Product for the Day” promotions. I for one have started hitting the un-subscribe link more and more. Not that it really matters, I have been turned off, and tuned out of any “Buying” mode by what I feel is basicly double opt-in Spam

    Continue to Abuse Your Lists, and I hope you lose. When someone signs up for your newsletter, well then send them a newsletter, don’t just fill their inbox with sales letters for products you probably don’t even have a clue if they are even worth one cent.

    I do find it rather funny (in a bad way) that this product of Mike’s was one that loaded my inbox. And Mike, I really hope you do right by the list you are building with this report, and that you will set the example for the rest of crowd, just as you say in the report.

    Time to turn the Soapbox over to someone else. Now that I have riled myself up, I’m off to un-subscribe to a bunch more lists, and regain control of my inbox.

    Internet Marketing is alive and very much well as long as we are able to come up with new and exciting ways to promote our business rather than just look at what Joe Blogs has done and copy him.

    Create your own business based on your strengths from a foundation of marketing strategies that will work for your market. The problem is I guess when we find a way that works and makes us loads of money we then want to create a product to tell everyone about it and make even more money!

    I have to agree with the overload of launches and yet when I opened my mail this morning I had over 20 messages telling me how to get my share if I hurry and jump on this.

    I look at it all with the reverse angel in mind and try to garnish what I can out of them.
    After all it is my opption to have my name removed from the lists.

    What I have learned from this garnishing is you will always be a day late and a dollar short if what your trying to make money with is something you just bought.

    Concentrate on your own niche ( which is most likely the thing you built your first website for ) and it is much easier to stay focused and act on the latest influx of new consumer optimized material arriving in your inbox everyday.

    I’m an artist for a living and started monitoring IM to help sell my work online. But what I’ve come up with is something new! It is not yet a trend, but it must be timely because it is similar to Russell Brunsons’ new project only with a very innovative twist I haven’t seen anywhere else yet. This is built for artists but the idea can be used almost anywhere.

    Mike, thank you for the report. You always know how to come up with the right title for a publication to get everyone’s attention.

    I think most of the readers of this report experienced many different emotions, thoughts, and ideas before, during and after reading it. Some will agree with all of it, some will agree with parts of it, and some will do just the opposite. Most importantly, the report will make all of them use their thought processes to digest what information you are sharing with all of us. This can be witnessed by the comments before and after this one individual posting.

    The mass e-mailing of the release of this publication is a prime example of some of the actual points given in the report.

    The Niche IM does have to make some major changes to be able to continue to thrive. One of the biggest changes should also include being consumer oriented to the needs of the actual consumer.

    Some of the postings above this one may be prime examples of comsumer trends. Most people make a decision to begin a career in the field of internet marketing due to their own personal experiences and hopes. I bet some of the posters, like most people, probably did a Google search using the keywords, “internet marketing”(little did they know, at that time, what “keywords” meant). Clicked on a few of the sites listed by Google, not to mention, the pay-per click listings on the Google pages. This led them to some sites with information on the site, offers of free information, and many other types of offers. Some of the sites would help them without having a squeeze page. Others, would as you put it in your “Butterfly Marketing” manual would send them through a maze of sign-ups for newletters and subscriptions that would fill up their mailboxes for eternity.

    This was good for everyone, including the subscribers. This helps to expose the subscribers to unlimited avenues of information on how to be successful at internet marketing, whether it be free or for a fee. But, over time, the subscribers begin to realize the linkage between a certain group of internet marketers. The subscribers were being bombarded with basically the same message about Product Launches from 12 to 15 of the same marketers.

    The same message how great this product is and you need it now to add it to your arsenal of products I have already sold to you in the past to help make you one of the most successful marketers in the business. After a period of time, the subscribers(purchasers) of the products wonder, “How was this person, who I subscribed to, able to get his hands on the product? How much did he/she pay for it? Did they really use the product? Why couldn’t I, the subscriber, gotten a preview of the usage of the script, software, or critical information to be successful in my field?

    Another area to possibly be looking at as for the decline in the click thru rate for an offer through an opt-in list subscriber is the subscriber.

    The subscriber is, possibly, becoming 1 of 2 things. The subscriber is becoming fedup with all of the offers being blasted into his mailbox with absolutely no other intention than to get his money versus actually wanting to help the subscriber. Or, the subscriber is becoming a smarter consumer. The smarter consumer is finding better ways of to increase their knowledge, increasing their arsenal of tools, and locating the person(mentor) to follow. I think it is a combination of both. I was so glad to see you make the comments about finding someone, who is successful, to study their methods.

    I am a subscriber to many newletters. I learn a lot from just being a subscriber to many of these newsletters. Yes, I, also, purchase products from some of these providers of the newsletters. There are good products, mediocre products, and bad products. It is kind of funny, how many of these newsletters shape the direction of the field of internet marketing.

    Give you an example of a recent newsletter talking about a great info product with master resale rights. It is kind of funny with the exception of it not being, hopefully, the newest trend of internet marketing.

    I will just cut it a short and say the info product was designed strictly for the producer of the product, not the purchaser. No rebranding capabilities at all. All of the links within the info product pointed to the producers’ squeeze page for opting-in newletters. Subjecting the purchasers’ opt-in list to being possibly lost to the producer of the info product, if the purchaser put the info product on his web site for sale. This product was not and is not good for the niche of internet marketing.

    The trend should be moving more toward allowing the potential customer to examine the product before having to purchase the product. Nearly every product in the world can be examined by the potential customer.

    Test drive the car, listen to the stereo system, open the box with the toilet seat in it, or sit in the reclining chair. The internet marketing consumers are not being able to do this before parting with their money. Yes, we have the unconditional guarantees of a refund if you are not happy but how many of them want to have to go through the motions of asking for a refund and the process of making sure they received it?

    I witnessed an internet marketer offering his product on a trial basis not very long ago. This was excellent marketing. The old “Puppy Dog Sale”, actually, being used in the field of internet marketing. Maybe the internet marketing community should look at this concept for improving the click thru rate for their products. Nuff said!

    As an ancient newbie, the only sound way forward I can see is with an associatiion with other newbies having complementay strengths to mine. I am useless at the technical part, but strong on the business, research and vision side.

    You report is excellent and that is what we expect from you. I agree in so many ways except for one and that is when I put quotes around the term guru it is usually in reference to a wannabe and not an actual guru. Wannabe’s are usually following the gurus and copying their information and never really supply any new ideas or concepts.
    I also believe that one of the biggest blights that are currently killing the effectiveness of people lists and their referral power to their lists are the free giveaways that are so frequent and dominating. I am guilty of gaining a lot of content for my own information and to share with other friends. My point is this, if I am on two marketers list and they promote the free giveaway, I then join 20-100 other lists to access free ebooks and the like. Those other 20-30 promoters for the giveaway do the same thing to their lists and those list members join other lists pretty soon there is no one that has a list that is unique. We have all joined each other lists and thus receive tons of promotional emails when a new product is launched. I can sort my email by subject line and when a new product is launched I can pretty much group all those promoting it and delete the emails except for the IM I choose to use to look into the new product. Click rates are down because of this. There is very little thought that goes into promoting a new product by the JV partners. They copy and paste the recommended emails and subject lines and send them out. No wonder they get very low click through rates. If I see a bunch of emails saying don’t buy until you read my emails or check out my bonuses I know the new product is very expensive and I can’t afford it. Sometimes I look but not often.
    Another item I see that devalues someone’s new product launch is the selling of resale rights. After BM was release another product was released that was similar and sold for around $47 USD. The next day, after release it, was being sold by some for a little as $9 USD. Being on so many lists because of the giveaways, I can basically pick and choose when a new product is released that includes MRR for a better price by waiting a few days if I chose to do so. It was within a week that the product I am referring to was being included in membership sites and was being bundled with other products for a low price. In fact there have been two products that followed the same pattern The second being Web Audio.
    If the product is a good one I could never figure out why selling the MRR to it made sense? I am basically newbie to all this so I realize maybe I am missing something there?
    So that is my penny’s worth.

    Many thanks for your report. I have read it carefully. Very revealing.

    I hope the following comments may prove interesting and add value.

    They come with the best of good intentions from somebody (a professional engineer) who is fairly new to the somewhat unruly on-line marketing scene but who can boast of his first off-line multi-million pound sterling contract, obtained over 40 years ago, and much varied and successful experience since, including offline direct mail marketing, business start-ups and consulting.

    YOUR REPORT TITLE.

    Looks familiar! The UK, where I’m based, is a Monarchy, so when one monarch dies and the next in-line ascends the throne,we would say “The King is Dead, Long Live the King!” And things go on much as before. So it is with Internet Marketing, although, as an ongoing entity, it should more correctly be referred to as a continuum.

    However, as you rightly point out, it is also a Niche having its own specialities.

    The past 60 years or so have seen the transition from many separate disciplines of sales, advertising, PR, exhibitions, direct mail, product training seminars and others into a natural amalgamation of one collective and integrated whole, now known as MARKETING. I know because I’ve lived through it all and been involved.

    Your own experience will no doubt confirm that Internet Marketing is a young but indivisible part of this whole and should be treated as such - THE ONLINE NICHE IN MARKETING.

    It is well known that substantial leverage can be obtained by making use of integrated on-line and off-line campaigns. This is probably a subject for another report sometime?

    E-MAIL

    Now about E-Mail which is both a CURSE and a BENEFIT.

    I haven’t got the answers, apart from thinkING that some strict international rules should be formulated and applied as they are to a greater extent in the offline marketing world.

    THE CURSE OF E-MAIL.

    I currently get over 800 e-mails per day and growing. I open less than 2%. What a dreadful time waster!

    With very good reason, I do not trust the Unsubscribe feature and consequently blacklist, report and bounce (using Mailwasher) or just delete those e-mails I don’t want before I download the residue to my machine.

    wHY DON’T PEOPLE DE-DUPLICATE THEIR LISTS?

    It’s common for me to get up to six identical e-mails from some folk.

    It is also common for me to get many offers from different people for the same thing. For instance, I have heard about your report from over 20 people to the time of writing (and more e-mail will, no doubt, arrive shortly).

    THE FILSAIME DOLLAR

    So I found myself in the odd position of being able to choose who would get the Filsaime Dollar for putting my name on your list - despite the fact that (judging by the e-mails I get from you) I must already be on several of your lists!

    Therefore, from your point of view, that must seem like a wasted dollar? How many others like me are there?

    You could have saved that dollar by e-mailing me yourself. Perhaps it’s in the post!

    De-duplicating lists is of course an essential money saving action taken in the off-line direct-mail world.

    It should also be essential for JV partners in the on-line world as well because one must factor-in the cost of annoying prospects. For me, that annoyance is one of the principle reasons to selectively blacklist JV participants.

    THE BENEFIT OF E-MAIL.

    Without e-mail, how are people going to find out about the latest and greatest on-line niche thing? One surely can’t rely on surfing habits.

    I think the answer lies with the search engines providing organic targeted leads for e-mail and viral marketing.

    I also think that before a marketer is allowed to make an offer to such a huge audience as the Internet provides, there should be a global mandatory requirement to submit the offer to an ‘Independant’International Consumers Association’ for vetting, testing and certification to ensure that proper standards of Safety, Fitness for Purpose and Sales Letter Promises are met.

    This could be paid for by (1) a levy on e-mails and (2) a nominal charge for testing and certification.

    At the moment, the Prospect - and especially in ‘Long Tail Niche Marketing’ - must be careful. ‘Caveat Emptor’ applies (let the buyer beware) and Guarantees are not an answer. Another shocking time and money waster sorting the wheat from the chaff!

    VISION.

    There seems to be an important stage missing from your analysis of the direction a novice marketer should take (pages 14 - 17).

    Whilst I fully agree with playing to your strengths rather than to your passions, the specific marketing direction a beginner should decide to take cannot be established before knowing what choice of directions there is.

    You use the football analogy, but there are many other games to choose from and each game has it’s own specialities. So the selection and learning curve is both big and steep since, unlike popular games, the Novice Marketer cannot be expected to know the choice of directions available, let alone the specialities within those directions.

    Assuming the novice marketer has a vision which includes goals of a financial nature, he or she wants to know which is the best direction to follow to achieve their goals within the envisioned time frame.

    Consequently, education is required for the Novice to undertake a proper comparative analysis.

    This is where the benefit of e-mail is a preferred medium in pointing out the directions available and the rewards obtainable.

    However, it’s currently an unregulated ‘push’ system rather than the regulated ‘pull’ system of the search engine.

    Consequently so much information is thrust at the Novice Marketer that confusion and lack of focus results. Hardly surprising.

    Much time and money is wasted and eventually disillusionment sets in.

    One should not blame the Novice for flitting like a ‘butterfly’ from one opportunity to another without focus.

    Without guidance, how is the novice expected to make a good choice?

    SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

    Currently, only the very analytical, cynical, persistent, focussed or lucky survive.

    It’s the system which requires some careful revisions to protect the novices. Could be a Win-Win situation for all concerned if only some answers could be found.

    My observations lead me to believe that many marketers in the Guru category could help - those who have legitimately won their internet marketing spurs - but have forgotten some basic things about where they came from.

    For instance, they often start their ‘How to’ marketing at a point already well over the head (and pocket) of the majority of Novice Marketers. How daft is that?

    In addition, personal experience shows that the majority carelessly omit information from their ’system’ products. This lack of completeness hinders the novice from being successful - or even from starting in the first place. I believe it to be a main contributory factor to the gathering of so much cyber dust on products sitting unused on people’s hard drives.

    WEB 2 AND INTERACTIVE WEBSITES

    I applaud your thinking about Web2 with an interactive interface.

    I do this with XPro Adsense sites having a script added which allows visitors to add comments etc. It collects details for subscriber lists and the search engines love it. It sure beats the hell out of the pushy double opt-in e-mail system. It’s use is in the Long Tail non-IM sector (before anybody asks - I won’t quote URLs in deference to Google TOS).

    The side benefit is that the Search Engine demands for unique fresh content means that one can add the content on a drip-drip basis and then apply that same content to the production of e-books for sale. This is a nice double-whammy earner.

    JOINT VENTURES

    Being a touch religious means that I don’t like JVs - far too incestuous and complicated. JVs run the serious and costly risk of annoying suspects / prospects - see above.

    If people insist on doing JVs, then they should have some method of comparing partners lists to de-duplicate and avoid multiple deliveries to individual suspects / prospects.

    I hate complication and only depend on one person - me and if I screw up I know who to blame! Affiliate marketing with squeeze pages is a better way to go - nice and simple especially with Clickbank. But even then, an affiliate must seek ways and means of adding value to the offer.

    LONG LIVE THE INTERNET MARKETING NICHE!

    I fully concur with the rest of your report. Well done, it’s always good to see a senior member of the IM fraternity taking the business apart every once in a while - so long as they put it back together again in an improved form as you have done.

    Dear Mr. Filsaime,
    Here are my thoughts on your report:
    I think you absolutely stole it from Scott Boulch, who recently wrote “The Death of AdSense” and “Life After AdSense.” If you didn’t rip off passages word-for-word, it’s obvious the whole idea was a total rip-off. I think Mr. Boulch has grounds for a lawsuit. Talk about Internet incest! Mr. Filsaime, in the very report you’re talking about copy-cat programs and launches, you steal someone else’s campaign.
    Beyond that, I found it to be rambling and unprofessionally written. I don’t understand why someone who is so successful can’t submit their reports and e-books to an editor for cleanup. It would cost you maybe a couple hundred dollars and make your report so much easier to read.
    The disclaimer about “type-o’s” is just a lame excuse for not taking the time or money to have your report edited. Besides, these weren’t typos, which are the wrong keys hit accidentally. These were mistakes and misspellings. And they’re a show of disrespect for your reader.
    It makes it much more difficult to read when “let’s” and “lets” are constantly confused, and “their” and “there,” “your” and “you’re,” etc., etc.
    Also, a good editor could have wittled the piece down to about 30 pages instead of 59, saving your reader valuable time.
    It’s one thing to have mistakes in emails and forums. It’s quite another to write a “must-have” report and sending it out to tens of thousands of people without bothering to spell-check or edit. And I’m just tired of it.
    If you are so successful, why don’t you show your professionalism with a little respect for your readers, instead of demonstrating your laziness with a wink and disclaimer.
    Editors don’t “like” to find typos, Mr. Filsaime. They like to read things that are clean because they’re easier to read, and they mistakenly think that YOU might want your stuff to be easy to read for your readers.
    Professional people don’t put out unpolished products. I don’t care if it was free. It was intended for tens of thousands of people. Show some respect for your readers.

Just take this report everyone is recommending. I stopped counting when i got more than 30 emails recommending this report. It is fine that you have the courage to create a new email list. Then you can delete the old, and face the fact that most people are subscribed 2 - 5 times on your lists. - Yes I counted 5 email accounts on your lists because I have been on the lists since you launced “My Viral Ads” in 2004.
    Every coach knows that you must feed your team with fresh blood in the bottom in order to survive, and internet marketing is not different. If you want to survive you MUST recruit new members every day. And there is a lot of them out there that also want to get a piece of the pie. And there is really NO limitations how big your list can grow if you look a little outside your own circles. So lets go out and find the fresh leads that haven’t been used 10 times before.

    Hi Mike,

    Thank you for the report you developed, “The Death of Internet Marketing.” I have to say that much of your remarks were right on “POINT!” I do think more attention should be given to the whole concept of “Marketing” and how marketing is done on the Internet. For example, one marketing approach that really bothers me is when the marketing guru invites you to what he/she refers to as “Free Information” in the Sales Letter, and then at the end, there is a pop up saying, “STOP,” You are only going to see this offer once. You will never have another chance to get this “product” or “service.” There are only 50 copies of the “product.” After that, there are no more…..etc. There is something wrong with that type of marketing. The customer is not stupid, he/she knows that more printed infromation could easily be produced. We must respect our customer and treat them with dignity, which will produce more dollars in the long run.

    A good Marketer in my opinion, is there to satisfy the needs and wants of his customers. Don’t limit the market to get all of the sales dollars today and only release (or sell) a few copies of something that could have been supplied in a greater number, and without using that kind of pressure.

    I could go on and on about some of the shameful activitity that is happening in the market place on the Intenet in the the name of the “Dollar Bill.” But I would rather support you and others who will opt to stand up and be professional in their marketing endeavors and write about it.

    There should probably be an Association of Professional Internet Marketers who will set up their own Rules of Ethics and police themselves so that Big Government will leave us alone.

    I realize from your email today that the Death Of IM was not supposed to be released and that you where going to go back and edit it all. This is to the Gentleman who blasted you for all the misspellings and grammatical errors. PHOOEY. We all know the first step in writing is to do a mind dump. Write first, edit second. It was easy to see that it was written in the mind dump mode and not edited. That made it seem as if it was an email from a family member or friend who was being passionate about what they where writing to me and thus made it more personal. Anyone who has followed any of your work knows how professional it is and could see that this was exactly what it was, a draft and not some machined ebook that had been edited and leaves out all the personality. It was the content and the points you made that where important and not the spelling. I must be real stupid because I hardly notice the misspellings and grammatical errors being more engrossed in the content.

    Once in awhile it’s good for a GURU to be a real person who makes the same spelling errors we all make. LOL

And I agree that collaborating internet marketers can accomplish greater things in sharing ideas and profits. I am just wondering where this would leave the little guy or girl like myself.     I’ve had my struggles trying to have an income from this industry, so along the way I’ve signed up for numerous news letters with the promise of help and guidance, B… S… most of these people are just trying to screw you for everything they can.

    I only hope these people read this article and take notice, it is no fun receiving 4 or 5 emails every week (most of it duplicated) from each and everyone of them, over the past 2 weeks I’ve unsubscribed to most of them.

    I’ve retained the one’s who give me content, ie help and guidance, and it’s a pleasure to receive their newsletters, I will follow their example.

    As for this article, it’s taught me many things but firstly I will define my vision and be more focused, taking care to avoid the wolf in sheeps clothing, from there it should be plain sailing to Hawaii.

    When I first heard the name of your report, I too wondered why a marketer of your caliber would feel compelled to use a title that appears to be a copycat of “The Death of Adsense”.

    And while I do agree that the recent onslaught of product launches, oto’s, email bombardments and resale rights products being devalued to the point that most of them have a “shelf life” of about 2 weeks has gotten completely out of hand, I find it ironic that you are now decrying the
    chaos when in a sense weren’t you the one that helped create it with the release of the “Butterfly Marketing” scripts and manual?

    Forgive me if I sound skeptical, but having been in IM for 8 years I’ve learned that very few marketers truly give something away for free without expecting something in return. Nothing wrong with that, its the way the IM “game” is played. I just wonder when you will begin emailing me promotions for your next product launch. I’m assuming of course that’s the reason you created a separate mailing list for “The Death of Internet Marketing” report.

    This report is definitely a wake up call to everyone in the Internet Marketing industry. Personally, I feel the industry is seriously being abused with all sorts of Internet Marketing products appearing from everywhere. And it got really bad when you see so called gurus sending you emails saying “Don’t buy xxx product until you read this”. A lot of these internet marketing gurus must feel their customers or people on their list are obliged to do as they say. Well I am not suprised that lists are not converting as they use to. When you have more than one person trying to sell you the same product through lists you surely know something is not right.

    Anyway, for me, the highlight of your report is where you emphasised that people in this industry need to

    -Define a vision for themselves
    -Identify and Align
    -Pick your position
    -Be great at one thing(Don’t be a Jack of All Trades and Master of none)
    -And Lastly ‘Sail To Hawaii’.

    I am definitely putting that into action.

    This free report is very good except the JV part. My advice to you is take this whole idea of “The Death Of…” presentation with a pinch of salt ((in the short term)). Honestly, the author is just playing a game of influence. Why do I say this?

    Because it is not beneficial for those who are willing to change their way of thinking to give up halfway in their current projects and restart again. Whatever your current projects are, they should be stepping stones towards the ideas this author is presenting. That’s natural progress. Whatever your goals are, if they are MORE urgent and important than what the report says, complete them, and leverage on the results to step up to the next level.

    The author, the same guy who said that one of the biggest JV mistake is to “insult the marketer by telling him how he is going to get rich by making this amount of $ with this % of conversion” in the report “The World’s Most Shocking JV Mistakes”, has stepped up, so don’t disturb him with JVs. Why? Because he feels spoilt for choices and has no positive vocabulary to express himself than to thump those who needs to eat rice.

    Perhaps he’s in Barclays Premier League, but we are still stuck at Division 2. So what? There will always be dime sales, firesales and Frugal Fridays. The flea market will always have its own flea audience, and we will continue to “sleep around with one another’s sisters” (page 8) . The author has not addressed “The Resurrection Of The Flea Market” because he has not realized flea markets also have their own evolving dynamics to make themselves relevant. Marketers continue to choose the way they make money by catering to a market they feel comfortable with, one that is compatible to their level of thought.

    True, trends will evolve, and the report is definitely prophetic, with great elements of Rich Schefren’s IBM ideas in it, but the moment the author promote for another marketer, the JV part can be forgettable.

    I feel that the statement on IM is well expressed by the above comment.

    Why did you link your report to the http://awis.blogspot.com/2006/10/content-as-democracy_20.html ? Are you seriously suggesting that content on the newer sites is a democratic process? Is the Internet truly a democratic forum/ market place, where all have an equal say? Judging from some of the comments posted, it is obvious that some don’t think so. I would agree with their sentiments

    I recently read a statistic that was astounding: 80% of all internet purchases are made by women. (4 out of 5)
    A massively significant figure.

    Another suggests that 34% (1 in 3 approx) of web users don’t speak English as a primary language. Yet another significant figure.
    Still another, that over 36% (over 1 in 3) do not have high speed internet connections. These are not all, by any means, confined to the developing world.

    What’s your point? Quite simply, democratically speaking, these people verge on the edges of disenfranchisement. The significant minorities whose voices are seldom heard, because of gender, income, or lack of English as their primary language. It seems self evident that all people in this paradigm are not created as equal. Unless we allow that ’some are more equal than others.’ to misquote George Orwell.

    The biggest mediator of content is not ‘the people’, as someone suggested. All content is mediated by the providers of the hosting of our sites.

    Internet marketers are mere players in a subtle yet lucrative marketing game.

    I think that for anyone to pontificate about the death of Internet marketing beggars belief. Especially as it’s predicated on ’some product launches didn’t go well’ for certain big names.

    To predict or elevate an opinon to prophecy on that basis is astounding. The predictions of experts are more often wrong than right.

    Stephen Levitt and Stephen Dubner’s book ‘Freakonomics’ has a chapter entitled ‘Where have all the Criminals Gone’, the premise is that crime figures in the US fell after many years, breaking all known predictions to the contrary.

    When experts tried to explain the drop they came up with various stragegies used by police depts. in the US. None of which were sustainable as the primary agents that stemmed the apparent carnage and mayhem previously predicted.

    Experts had given their opinions, experts crawled from every nook and crevice to pass on their learned opinions. People, who were far from expert, commented as experts on areas in which they had a little more knowledge than Joe Public. ( Sounds familiar ) Each producing his own little expert info product for public consumption.

    Levitt and Dubner’s contention is that the effect of one action often repeated, stemmed and turned the tide. That act was the legitimisation of abortion. ( I’m not making any moral or religious statement here, I have no opinion as to the ethical or moral arguments that surround the subject). Effectively the people who would have been born criminally inclined, for whatever reasons, (social, economical etc) were simply not born at all. Hence lower crime rates. Truly a ‘butterfly effect’, if their contention is correct.

    So, is internet marketing dying or dead? No!
    Perhaps the sensationalist statement may ring true to many.They will no doubt in the light of the prophets, adjust their course. Following whomever’s sailing to wherever they sail to.

    The fact remains people still want to buy things. The reason people buy consumer products and info products, is they are wanting to gain in many cases greater use of the only non-renewable commodity we all possess: the use of TIME. Time to be who we want to be. The reason they use the Internet is they find it gives them that freedom.

    So, as the big names plan their swan songs and promote their latest retirement plan to us (which we fund with our own purchases of their products) . Let’s not forget, we all have but one aim, we want to sell to make a living. The Internet is still a massive marketplace and it’s still open 24/7.

    Here’s something for you to mull over: When you put a testimonial on a page from a person who is making a commission by selling the product, it borders on “down-right” unethical. AND YET, so many of the IM gurus are doing it, it’s pathetic.

    Well I agree to a certain extent… It gets to a point where there are so many shovel sellers out there, that they run out of gold miners to sell the shovels to! There will always be a few newbies to sell to, and I for one would love to be an established shovel seller, but realisticly we have to realise when there are just too many around.

    It’s got to be very difficult to start to become a shovel seller now.

    I will be happy to take the good shovels that I am offered and use them to try to become a gold miner. There is still plenty of gold out there in all the non IM niches.

    But Mike, I think you are right. The more lists I am on, the less attention I pay to the flood of e-mails in my inbox every day. For some time I have been the person who keeps changing direction and getting nowhere. Now it’s just delete, delete, delete to almost all the offers.

    It’s no wonder guru respopnse rates are going down, people are just on too many lists. There will always be money in IM, But I think most people trying to jump on board now with dreams of marketing to IM’ers are doing just that… they are dreaming.

    I’m now focusing on the niche I’m passionate about - women who want to have a business/career and not have to sacrifice their family to achieve success.

    Ever since hearing you speak at World Internet Summit UK 2006, I have opened and read all your emails. While many go straight into the “exciting stuff to read later” folder.

    This report - while undoubtedly clever, sums up what many of us in the UK who have been making a living online for a long time, have been feeling.

    I built a wealth coaching business from the ground up from 1999 and I have made many hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years, mainly by marketing real world products and services - my own, or those of close associates whose authenticity I could personally vouch for - to my warm, loyal responsive mailing list.

    However, in the last year or two, I have been seduced into mailing my list more often with 3rd party mailings, and my list, while growing always, seemed to be shrinking in terms of opened emails and responsiveness.

    Now there are several internet marketers in the UK who mail out absolutely everything, and a lot of my list are now on their list too, because I supported a couple of events in the beginning, so my list are getting fed up.

    The other issue we have here is that there is a growing crowd of internet marketers who throw money at free 3-day events, knowing they will make millions in back of room sales - this has completely killed the market for any paid event here. A couple of years ago we filled a Wealth Conference with folks paying Ā£975 to attend, that SO wouldn’t happen now.

    Folks expect everything for free, then don’t turn up because they don’t value what that haven’t paid for, then the events are a big disappointment to the participants - who often pay their own expenses on the promise of high attendee numbers.

    This is not a whinge - just a statement of fact. Several of us quieter more established characters have just reviewed our strategy and decided that enough is enough.

    Just a couple of weeks ago, I decided to only mail out our value driven ezine “Wealth Strategy Secrets” once a week, and limit ANY other mailings to one a week - regardless of whether it was mine, or one of my close associates (see, instinctively doing what you suggest with the skulls idea).

    I am going to draw up a list of maximum 8 strategic partners, and each one of those must be marketing offline as well as online, and be marketing to the real world business and entrepreneurs community - not the IM market or the “Get Rich Quick” market. Then I will only mail my own, and the best of their offerings. And only after I have experienced their products or services myself (something I’ve always been keen on)

    I really like the idea of promoting just one thing a month, so that one can mail more often for the one thing - something we all know works better as people need more than one mailing to respond.

    I’m off to revise my mailing schedule still further - thanks for that!

    The other impact your report has had is to make me review my vision - which is now tightly targeted as “Financial Freedom For All”. I have even created “Four Pillars Of Wealth” to give my vision a firm foundation and I will be blogging about those over the next few weeks.

    All in all, a thought provoking and inspirational report.

    I have a question thou.
    Why does everyone is skeptical about others motives.
    I am an honest person who after 20 years is just plain fed up with the rat race on all the program coming up!
    I have found a $12 home buisness
    and am trying to create a downline team different in that I do not want to put 1 member under each one and so forth.
    I find that does not help anyone. Has anyone who has ever joined these had a full matrix or ever made any money
    I do not want people to drop out of a program I am trying to work
    I want everyone to be happy
    This means more to me and taking more time personally with every member.
    I guess what the end comment for me would be is that if this does not work for everyone..I just do not want to do another thing online. I want to give it my best shot..stay committed and have a system where the members do not have to constantly put money in something to get exposure or hits or signups
    why can’t will just try something simple..be honest and make everyone happy because in the end..if everyone is happy we will all be successful if not in the end we will all fail.

    The value of information products are gone because of over-propagation due mainly to viral marketing.

    each of the lists that I do belong to have all managed to give a decent
    enough thank you for hanging in there. I usually ignore the Launches
    and It pays off to wait until the dust settles a little because the banter
    afterwards is far more interesting. There is always a critic lurking some
    where. I enjoyed your work for some time now and I found it very
    accurate. I thought you might have given more options in your survey
    because some of the questions didn’t give much room for freshly
    started businesses, some quarters of advertising and adsense has only
    begun and full tests have not been completed.
